Hello all,
I’ve been a long time lurker on Jalopnik and Opposite lock, and I would like to start sharing my automotive endeavors with the OPPO community. Here’s a little bit about myself.
I am a college student, runner, and automotive enthusiast. I’m a Technologies major, and Computer Science Minor. I run cross-country and track for my school, and I work a part time job as a mechanic for the school I attend. Most of the time I work on late 1990s dodge fleet vehicles and trucks, as well as Kubota riding lawnmowers. Currently I drive a 1991 Mazda Miata, I bought it in the summer of 2015, from a one owner, it presently sits at just under 76,000 miles. A part from the wheels and removable hardtop, it is bone stock, all the way down to the cassette player. At home, I have a 1986 Toyota MR2 that runs and drives well, and is in good shape cosmetically, but is plagued with a few electrical gremlins. It’s mechanically strong, however parts are becoming increasingly rare to come by.
This summer I have big road trip plans, (possibly coast to coast) and I look forward to attending my first autocross session. I have not decided on which car to try first, the Miata or MR2? I would love to hear your suggestions on what I should take out to knock over a few cones and embarrass myself in an empty parking lot.
Thanks for giving this a quick read, and I’ll keep you all updated!

Having autocrossed (albeit briefly) each, the MR2 is much more fun. It’s much more difficult to drive fast but its by far the more fun of the two.

I’ve got a red AW11 too, but I swapped in the 20v blacktop motor! I’ve never driven a Miata, but I’ve been autocrossing my MR2 for a while now and it can be a challenging yet very rewarding car to drive. It really rewards smooth driving and will punish you with understeer and sudden oversteer if you get too ham-fisted, but it feels awesome when you get on the gas and feel it dig in

Do a photoshoot with both of the cars, under a bridge, in a warehouse, etc. They look like they’re fierce competitors.

You own my two favorite cars in the world! Welcome brother. They are also the best cars in the world, no bias.

Welcome! Just out of curiosity, why did you decide to buy two different Japanese 2 seaters?

The Miata will be more competitive class-wise, but the AW11 is a MUCH more rewarding driving experience, especially stock for stock. You’ll also learn more about driving in a shorter time, as the MR layout punishes bad habits and rewards skill.
